    Somalia Journalists on duty beaten, abused in Mogadishu

    MOGADISHU (Horn Observer) Two Somali journalists Saeed Qarafan and Abdullahi Dahir were beaten, abused on Monday morning by the Somali police, the journalists were on duty when the incident happened, local human rights organization said.

MOGADISHU (Horn Observer) Two Somali journalists Saeed Qarafan and Abdullahi Dahir were beaten, abused on Monday morning by the Somali police, the journalists were on duty when the incident happened, local human rights organization said.

The journalists Saeed Qarafan and Abdullahi Dahir who were freelance journalists working for Kulmye radio were stopped by the police in Mogadishu’s Zope area, forced to put their chests on the ground and were held against their will for several hours, according to Journalists for Human Rights (HRJ).

Disturbing photographs of the journalists were circulating on the social media.

The rights group, Human Rights Journalists (HRJ) condemned the incident saying its against the human rights of the journalists and the freedom of expression and called for the federal government of Somalia to respect the human rights of the journalists.


"This is very painful scenerio against the independent media” Abdulkadir Farah Dulyar, Secretary general of the HRJ said.

In a separate incident, journalists who were invited by Villa Somalia for reporting purposes were held several hours at a waiting room and finally were asked to leave.

"How can you waste the journalists’ time especially more than 8 hours” Secretary General of HRJ added.

Somalia government have been accused for intimidation, corruption and threats against the independent media and this puts the already dire situation of the journalists into more threatening level.
