Addis Ababa, (Horn Observer) - Ethiopian government said on Sunday that it had established a new security unit aimed to protect the country's leadership, following meeting with the country's prime Minister, Ethiopia's FANABC reported on Monday

The new army unit identified as Republic Guard is mandated to use any means necessary in protecting the highest level of the country’s leadership from threats and attempted attacks.

Dr. Abiy Ahmed  on Sunday met the Republican Guards who undertook various rescue and combat scenario exercises to demonstrate their readiness in protecting higher government officials and their family, from any form of aggression by ill-intentioned forces, the report added.

A military court in Ethiopia jailed early this month 66 soldiers for between five and 14 years for marching on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s palace in October, ruling they had broken military ethics, officials said. But Abiy, who was shown on state television that day doing push-ups with the soldiers, subsequently announced that leaders of the group had "nefarious aims” to stop reforms and unnamed members had "regretted missing out on the opportunity to kill him”.
